Go to Wine Heaven at Wurstmarkt – The World’s Biggest Wine Festival

The world’s biggest wine festival is held each year in Bad Dürkheim, Germany. Held during the second and third weekend of September, Wurstmarkt hits an important milestone year. 2016 will mark the 600 year occurrence of this popular wine festival. The very first German wine festival was held way back in the year 1417.

Wine making is big business in Germany. The European country has thirteen different wine growing regions. The regions produce incredible wines ranging from crisp Riesling wines to a floral Pinot Noir.

What is interesting is that the wine festival’s name – Wurstmarkt – translates to sausage market. Most people don’t associate wine and sausage together. The town of Bad Dürkheim is located in the premier wine-growing state, Rhineland Palatinate. The legend of how Wurstmarkt got its name is due to the large amounts of sausage that was eaten during the early years of the wine festival. Now it’s the World’s Biggest Wine Festival and people attend from all around the world.

It is expected that greater than 600,000 people will attend this year’s wine festival in Germany. Be sure to check out the Giant Cask, named Dürkheimer Riesenfass. It’s known as the biggest wine barrel in the world. Surprisingly, it even includes a restaurant inside.

Wine connoisseurs can try about 300 award-winning wines and sparkling wines. In addition to the many food and drink stands, plan on enjoying the various fairground carnival rides. There will also be music concerts and spectacular fireworks displays. This is an amazing cultural experience that should not be missed, especially for wine lovers.

This year’s Wurstmarkt wine festival will be held on the consecutive weekends of September 9 to 13 and 16 to 19.

Be sure to attend Wurstmarkt in Germany at the World’s Biggest Wine Festival. Contact The Life of Luxury today for help booking your luxury travel itinerary. Come back again to follow our luxury blog and read about other popular events from around the world.

It’s Voodoo Time at the International House Hotel in New Orleans

Each year, voodoo followers celebrate of the important “feast day”, named St. John’s Eve on June 23. Also called Bonfire Night, this midsummer festival occurs on the the shortest night of the whole year.

St. John’s Eve is also significant because it’s the evening before the feast of St. John the Baptist. Voodoo has a long history in the city of New Orleans. The practice still thrives to this day. Voodoo can be categorized as a group of native religions from West Africa. You can get a taste of the cultural influence of voodoo at the iconic International House hotel in New Orleans.

This luxury boutique hotel is located in downtown New Orleans. St. John’s Eve has been celebrated there for 17 years and next month you can experience a true “voodoo” ritual. Between 6 and 8pm on June 23, a voodoo ceremony including a ritual head-washing will take place. This year’s ceremony will be led by Sallie Ann Glassman. She is the ordained vodoo priestess who owns the nearby Island of Salvation Botanica, located on Piety Street. It’s a supernatural celebration honoring the birthday of St. John the Baptist.

The International House building is a New Orleans landmark. It started out as a bank, then became the world’s first World Trade Center. The building was designed with neoclassical architecture. It became the International House hotel in 1998. The hotel was the inspiration of local owner Sean Cummings, Los Angeles interior designer LM Pagano and New Orleans architect Brooks Graham. The hotel has become an ideal place of sophisticated travelers who desire luxury accommodations along with the cultural vibe of New Orleans.

As you enter the hotel you’ll see a 10-foot-tall papier-mache statue of Marie Laveau. She was the legendary founder, queen and practitioner of voodoo. Marie Laveau died on June 16, 1881 and is buried at the city’s St. Louis Cemetery #1 on Rampart Street. Popular with visitors to New Ortleans, her tomb is surprisingly the second most seen tomb in the entire U.S.

The motivation behind the hotel’s voodoo’s interested was discussed by Sean Cummings, “The idea is to share with guests how joyful, exotic, spiritual, and completely authentic this city remains, a proud people shunning the Brooklyn | Portland-ization that strips identity from so many other places in this Instagram age. We offer a glimpse of New Orleans today, a city of architecture, food, music, joyful culture and colorful characters unlike any other place, living it like a local beyond the obvious.”

Cummings focuses on seven different rituals that annually make up the key festivals New Orleans honors each year. They are – Carnival, St. Joseph’s Day, the Inauguration of Summer Dress, St. John’s Eve, Winter Dress, All Saint’s/All Soul’s Day and Christmas.

What is so impressive is the only other distillery in the world with more five-star reviews is the iconic Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Ireland.

Due to the fact that Gatlinburg has distilleries and wineries in the area, it’s obviously a city many spirits enthusiasts wan to visit. Although the distillery only opened in March of 2014, it’s popularity is impressive. Since then, greater than 2 million people have stopped for a visit.

Another tour option is their “Distiller for the Day Workshops.” You will get to spend a full day meeting Greg Eidam, who is the Head Distiller. There’s no better way to learn than doing something yourself. So have fun making your own batch of Sugarlands Shine. You will be educated on the entire moonshine distilling process. Start out by grinding corn and then mix up mash. You will next proof the distillate. By the end of the day, you’ll be ready to fill up jars with the actual, award-winning moonshine you created.

It’s a fascinating process and this tour will give you a VIP experience you will always remember. Of course, that’s assuming you don’t sample too much moonshine yourself. Get immersed in the moonshine distilling process and take lots of pictures along the way.

While you’re at the distillery, be sure to sample the moonshine. There are 14 different flavors and you can taste just 1 or all 14 if you want. The behind the scenes tour is wonderful and enjoy the pleasure of listening to bluegrass and country live music and Appalachian storytelling. It’s a great cultural experience for everyone.
