Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1869

A new record was broken for the world’s most expensive wine ever sold at an auction.

At the recent Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong, three bottles of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild 1869 vintage wine were each sold for a new all-time record of $232,692 (HK$1.8 million).

The Asian wine market continues to be strong for very expensive, top label wines.

The total of the entire Chateau Lafite collection auctioned off at Sotheby’s brought in an astonishing total of $8.4 million.

The Sotheby’s auction was held at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong ballroom. The announcement of the winning bid drew a thunderous applause from the other auction participants.

The Chateau Lafite collection consisted of 284 lots of Lafite, in addition to other chateaux that were owned by Domaines Baron de Rothschild.

The entire wine collection had been exclusively stored in cellars after being bottled, before their shipment to Hong Kong for the Sotheby’s auction.

Lafite reached the top of the first, official quality-based classification of Medoc wines back in 1855.

In 1868, the chateau was purchased by Baron James de Rothschild. Since that time the wine bottles have been proudly labeled as Lafite-Rothschild.

Cursed Hot Buttered Rum

Ingredients:
Large batch recipe for cocktail base:
* 1 lb. Brown Sugar
* 0.25 lb. Butter
* Pinch of Salt
* 4.0 oz. Fresh Apple Cider
* 0.5 oz. Fresh Extracted Ginger Juice
* 0.5 tsp. Nutmeg
* 0.5 tsp. Allspice

Individual cocktail recipe:
Using this prepared cocktail base, select an appropriate mug. Then add:
* 2 Heaping Tablespoons of the Prepared Cocktail Base
* 2.0 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve
* Approximately 6.0 oz. of Hot Water, Stir
* Garnish: Cinnamon Stick

Glass:
Mug

Preparation:
Blend the above ingredients and bring to a boil before removing from the heat then let cool and store in refrigerator.

Witch’s Pumpkin Egg Nog

Ingredients:
* 1.5 oz. Appleton Estate Reserve Rum (Infused with Cloves, Allspice, Cinnamon)
* 0.5 oz. Navan Vanilla Liqueur
* 1 oz. Eggnog
* 1 oz. Pumpkin Purée (From the Can)
* 4 Dash Fees Aromatic Bitters
* 1 Bar Spoon Maple Syrup Grade B
* Optional: Fresh Whipped Cream Top (Heavy Whipping Cream)

Glass:
7 oz Martini or Coop

Preparation:
Build all ingredients in your shaker; shake and strain into a chilled martini or coop glass; top with fresh whipped cream (optional).

Mojito is a traditional Cuban cocktail which became quite popular in the United States during the late 1980s, but has recently seen a resurgence in popularity.  Its combination of sweetness and refreshing citrus and mint flavors are intended to mask the potent kick of the rum.

This summer has clearly been a momentous one for fine bourbon and tequila lovers around the world.

We have seen the launch of Maker’s 46, the first ever new bourbon from the historic Maker’s Mark Distillery, in addition to the launch of Tequila Avión, an ultra-smooth, premium tequila made from 100% Blue Weber Agave.

As Labor Day has arrived and many summer vacations are winding down, people are enjoying the their last summer beach getaway or backyard barbecue. Of course, we know many cool cocktails will be flowing.

The following recipes for Maker’s Mark, Maker’s 46 and Tequila Avión cocktails are perfect for summer.

Summer Breeze
– 1 part Maker’s Mark
– 1 part Ginger Ale
– A splash of Cointreau
– 1 orange slice
Directions: Muddle an orange slice in an old-fashioned glass with a splash of Cointreau. Add in equal parts Maker’s Mark Bourbon and ginger ale. Stir gently. Top off with ice.

Char No. 46

– 2 parts Maker’s 46
– Muddled fresh peaches
– 1 part Averna Amaro
– Dash of fresh orange juice
– 1 egg white
– Bitters
Directions: Muddle peach in shaker and add all ingredients except the bitters. Shake vigorously for at least one minute. Strain into a chilled rocks glass. Drizzle bitters on the foam and garnish with fresh peach.

Bonita Margarita
– 1.5 parts Tequila Avión Reposado
– 1 part guava puree
– 1 part fresh lime juice
Directions: In a shaker over ice combine all ingredients. Shake until frothy and strain over fresh ice. Garnish with toasted coconut flakes.

Salida del Sól
– 1.5 parts Tequila Avión Reposado
– 1 part blood orange juice
– Splash of fresh sour mix
Directions: Combine all ingredients in a shaker over ice and shake well. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with an orange twist.
